Boonah region has long been known as “The Heart of the Scenic Rim” with its backdrop of magnificent mountain ranges. The area extends from the small historic towns of Peak Crossing and Harrisville in the north to the NSW border in the south and is less than an hour from Brisbane and 1 ½ hrs from Gold Coast. The region encompasses Aratula, a convenient stop on the busy Cunningham Highway, with shops, cafes and antiques, Kalbar, a historic German settlement with a country pub, cafes and shops and Boonah. Boonah is a bustling town which has lost none of its country charm. There is a good selection of cafes, pubs, supermarkets and many other shops as well as art galleries. Take the time to wander down the main street and soak up the country atmosphere.

This region contains World Heritage listed Main Range National Park and although much of the park is wild and rugged there are some excellent walking tracks at Spicer’s Gap and also Cunningham’s Gap. Moogerah Peaks National Park comprises three main Peaks – Mt Greville which dominates the end of Lake Moogerah, Mt Edwards which can be accessed from the dam wall and also Mt French which is just a short drive from Boonah. Frog Buttress at Mt French attracts rock climbers from around the world but there are two short walks with look outs for the not so adventurous.

The Scenic Rim’s only lakes are situated in this region. Lake Moogerah and Lake Maroon are both only a short drive from Boonah and offer excellent picnic facilities as well as being well know for fishing, boating and water skiing. There are camping facilities available at both lakes.

There is something to suit everyone from scenic country drives, bird watching, wineries, and golf to hot air balloons, gliders and ultralights. Relaxing short strolls or energetic full day walks.
