Mt Barney National Park

About Mt Barney NP

Distinctive and spectacular mountain peaks dominate Mt Barney NP – the towering heights of mounts Maroon, Clunie, Earnest, May, Lindesay and Ballow are impressive, but it is Mount Barney which tops the list as the second highest peak in south-east Queensland. All mountains are the remains of an ancient Focal Shield Volanco which errupted 24-million years ago.

Vegetation is extremely varied, with some rare species in amongst classic Australian eucalypts, patches of rainforest and some unusual mallee eucalypt scrublands on Mount Maroon. In the open grassy lower country kangaroos and wallabies are common, as are many species of bird. The park is home to over 34 mammal, 182 bird, 40 reptile and 71 frog species. Six species including the eastern bristlebird and Coxen’s Fig parrot are endangered.

Mt Barney National Park has a special significance to Aboriginal people who have legends to explain their connection with the mountains.

Mt Barney is easily accessed from the Boonah-Rathdowney Road.
