Where is Tamborine Mountain?Located in South East Queensland just a one hour drive south of Brisbane, or 45 minutes from the Gold Coast, you can escape to another world. Tamborine Mountain is a sub-tropical Sanctuary located on the Eastern escarpment of the Scenic Rim. With stunning views to the West as far as the Great Dividing Range and to the East over the Gold Coast and the ocean this is a unique escape from the hustle and bustle of the City. Tamborine Mountain originated from the Mount Warning volcanic explosion 22 millions of years ago, resulting in soil that is rich and fertile. Combined with a high level of rainfall this created the perfect climate for the many sub tropical rainforests spread over this 8 kilometre plateau. Tamborine was the home of the Wangerriburra aborigines before the white settlers arrived over 100 years ago, predominantly timber cutters and agricultural farmers, who started clearing the land for commercial purposes. Fortunately the natural beauty of the mountain was recognised and protected by the government in 1908 when the first National Park in Queensland was created at Witches Falls National Park.
Since then 12 separate sections have been added to the Tamborine National Park providing a great range of walking tracks for people to explore these sub tropical rainforests. Discover hidden waterfalls, hundred year old trees and an abundance of natural wildlife including rock wallabies, scrub turkeys, lyre birds, lorikeets and the elusive platypus.
After exploring all the natural attractions visitors can enjoy relaxing with a coffee on Gallery Walk in Eagle Heights. This main street is now famous for its local handcraft shops, galleries, cafes and antique shops, a reflection of the strong artistic community that call the Mountain home. For visitors who want to stay a few nights and enjoy all the mountain has to offer there is a broad range of accommodation on the mountain from elegant resorts and rainforest retreats to Bed and Breakfast and country cottages, many with stunning views.
Due to the subtropical climate on the mountain the weather is often 4 to 5 degrees cooler than the hot, humid temperatures experienced in other parts of South East Queensland. This provides a welcome relief in the summer and a cosy atmosphere in the winter, with open fires becoming the centre of attention in local cafes and guest houses.
Over the years Tamborine Mountain has become a “must see” destination for visitors to South East Queensland primarily due to the climate, the National Parks and the broad range of attractions. These include the new Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, the Glow Worm Caves, the famous Tamborine Mountain Distillery, TM Brewery and Cheese Factory, and the many wineries on the mountain offering wine tasting. On a more local level you might be lucky to see the hand-gliders taking off on weekends from the western escarpment, wander around the country markets held on the second Sunday of the month or simply filling up a basket of fresh produce from the many farm gate stalls dotted around the mountain. The rich volcanic soils support a diversity of horticulture. Commercial crops include avocado, kiwifruit, avocado and macadamia nuts.
Whatever you choose to do we are sure you will enjoy the many attractions and natural beauty of the mountain and look forward to welcoming you to our Sanctuary. Download these Tamborine Mountain location and walking maps to help guide your way:
